2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Reviews Summary

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the automaker’s debut electric vehicle from its new sub-brand that focuses solely on battery electric-powered and eco-friendly mobility. The all-new Ioniq 5 is chock full of battery technology, smart car connectivity, advanced safety, and unique design all at a price point that appeals to the masses.

2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Reviews Summary

The Volkswagen ID.4 electric car is still relatively new to the marketplace (it debuted for the 2021 model year) but VW is already making some important updates to keep it competitive and fulfil goals set when this compact electric SUV first launched.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 adds a new base model and a smaller 62-kilowatt-hour battery pack alongside the carryover 82-kWh to increase affordability. VW will also begin sourcing cars for its North American dealerships from the same Chattanooga, Tennessee, factory that builds the gasoline-powered Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport. The automaker has been discussing this since the ID.4 was unveiled, but at first cars for our market came from Zwickau, Germany.

The 2023 ID.4 retains single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrain options, but gets revised exterior and interior styling, some software changes, and a few more standard tech features and driver aids.

The new-for-2023 base model is dubbed simply ID.4, slotting below the ID.4 Pro and ID.4 Pro AWD. We recently spent a day on a test drive with the U.S. equivalent of the ID.4 Pro AWD model, along with a shorter drive in a base ID.4 model.

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 marked a significant departure from its predecessor, the original Ioniq, by establishing itself as the first model under Hyundai's new Ioniq sub-brand dedicated solely to electric vehicles. This model showcased a futuristic design with its Parametric Pixel theme, reminiscent of retro 8-bit graphics, which was evident in its extensive use of LED lighting elements. The exterior design was a mix of minimalistic lines and intricate details, creating a unique visual appeal. Inside, the Ioniq 5 offered a serene "Living Space" environment with sustainable materials and a focus on comfort, including a "Relaxation" mode for the driver's seat, emphasizing its commitment to eco-friendly luxury.

In contrast, the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 underwent subtle styling updates, including gloss black trim on the front bumper and a more aerodynamic rear bumper design. While it maintained a distinct EV identity, the ID.4's design leaned more towards a traditional SUV look, albeit with a lower profile and less ground clearance. The interior carried over the minimalist design and quality feel from VW's gasoline models, with leatherette upholstery and recycled fibres. The ID.4's cabin was spacious, offering ample legroom and headroom, and featured practical updates like a conventional lid for the centre console and three-zone climate control, enhancing its functionality and comfort.

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 offered a range of powertrains, starting with a base model featuring a 125-kW rear-mounted motor producing 168 horsepower and a range of 354 kilometres. The Preferred long-range variant increased power to 225 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, with a range of 488 km. The AWD version, with dual motors, delivered 320 hp and 446 lb-ft of torque, though the range dropped to 414 km. The Ioniq 5's performance was balanced, with four drive modes, including Sport, which added excitement but reduced range. Regenerative braking was adjustable, enhancing driving dynamics, while noise reduction features ensured a quiet ride.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 offered a choice between a new 62-kWh battery pack for the base model and an 82-kWh pack for the Pro variant. The RWD models produced 201 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque, while the AWD version increased output to 295 hp and 339 lb-ft, achieving 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. The smaller battery pack reduced weight, improving acceleration and handling. The ID.4's regenerative braking system allowed coasting in default mode, with a more aggressive "B" setting, but lacked one-pedal driving. While the ID.4 excelled in acceleration, it fell short in handling compared to hot hatchbacks.

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, built on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), boasted a longer wheelbase than the seven-passenger Palisade, maximizing interior space. It offered 3,786 litres of total interior volume, surpassing competitors like the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Volkswagen ID.4. The Ioniq 5 prioritized passenger comfort with a "Living Space" theme, featuring a moveable centre console and flat floor. The leatherette seats provided excellent support, catering to various driver sizes, while the interior design emphasized usability and comfort.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 excelled in interior space, offering more legroom and headroom than competitors like the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Nissan Leaf. With 858 litres of cargo space with the rear seats up and 1,818 litres with them folded, it outperformed most entry-level EVs. The ID.4 also offered towing capabilities, with RWD models towing up to 1,000 kg and AWD models up to 1,225 kg. Interior updates for 2023 included a conventional lid for the centre console and three-zone climate control, enhancing functionality and comfort for passengers.

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 featured cutting-edge technology, including a high-voltage system with vehicle-to-load capabilities, allowing it to charge other devices. It supported 800-volt charging, achieving 80% battery capacity in 18 minutes. The Ioniq 5's infotainment system included a redesigned Blue Link app, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and over-the-air updates. The 12.3-inch screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment system were elegant and anti-glare, ensuring clear visibility even with polarized sunglasses.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 came standard with a 12.0-inch touchscreen, offering improved responsiveness and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The infotainment system featured sharp graphics and natural-language voice recognition. However, the haptic touchpads on the dashboard and steering wheel remained a drawback, lacking physical feedback. The ID.Light system provided ambient lighting and navigation cues, enhancing the driving experience, though it could be easily overlooked.
