2021 Toyota RAV4 Reviews Summary

Since its launch in 1997, the Toyota RAV4 has ridden a wave of crossover SUV popularity to become one of Toyota’s bestselling models. Introduced for the 2019 model year, the current-generation RAV4 tries to offer the rugged style of a traditional SUV, but underneath it’s still a car-based crossover pitched against the likes of the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

Because it’s only in its third model year, this fifth-generation RAV4 doesn’t get many updates for 2021. The biggest news is the addition of the RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid to the lineup, but that model actually went on sale last year.

Toyota offers compact SUV buyers more choices than most competitors. The Toyota RAV4 LE, XLE, and Limited trim levels are available with hybrid and non-hybrid powertrains. Toyota also offers the gasoline-only Premium package for the XLE grade and the RAV4 Trail grade with available TRD Off-Road package, plus the RAV4 Hybrid XSE. The RAV4 Prime is also available in two trim levels—SE and XSE.

This review will focus on the gasoline RAV4. Our test car was a RAV4 Trail with the TRD Off-Road package, which joined the lineup for the 2020 model year and is the first RAV4 model tuned by Toyota Racing Development, the automaker’s North American performance division.

2022 Volvo XC90 Reviews Summary

What does your average vegan internet mogul drive while waiting for their Tesla to charge? The 2022 Volvo XC90 three-row crossover can slot right in with an available plug-in hybrid variant, available leather-free features, and crunchy memories from the late 20th century. With fuel economy ratings as low as 3.4 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres, XC90 owners can hold their eco heads high.

Look and feel
2021 Toyota RAV4
8/10
2022 Volvo XC90
9/10

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 presented a rugged exterior reminiscent of traditional SUVs, with boxy fender flares and chiseled taillights that set it apart from previous generations and other compact crossovers. Despite its aggressive styling, the RAV4 was built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, shared with other Toyota models like the Camry, which meant its mechanical underpinnings were more conventional. The RAV4 offered options like the Trail model with a retro Ice Edge roof and the TRD Off-Road package with matte black alloy wheels and red interior accents, enhancing its adventurous appeal. Inside, the RAV4 featured functional touches like large rubberized knobs and SofTex upholstery, although material quality did not significantly improve with higher trims.

In contrast, the 2022 Volvo XC90 embraced a luxurious and modern design, moving away from the boxy shapes of its past. The XC90's sleek profile and pronounced wheel arches conveyed athleticism, while the "Thor's Hammer" LED headlights added a nod to its Swedish heritage. The interior was described as "Scandinavian Modern," with natural wood and metal trim, and exquisite details like a crystal gear selector. Volvo's commitment to sustainability was evident, with options for Nappa leather or a tailored wool blend upholstery. The XC90's interior was spacious and comfortable, with a focus on family-friendly features and a commitment to safety, maintaining Volvo's long-standing reputation in this area.

Performance

2022 Volvo XC90
8/10

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 was equipped with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It offered standard front-wheel drive with optional all-wheel drive. The engine boasted 40% thermal efficiency, a level typically seen in racing engines, and delivered power at high RPMs. However, the transmission's hesitance and the steering's lack of feel detracted from the driving experience. The RAV4's off-road capabilities were enhanced in the Trail and TRD Off-Road models, featuring torque-vectoring all-wheel drive and 21.7 centimetres of ground clearance, but its on-road dynamics remained ordinary.

The 2022 Volvo XC90 offered three powertrains: the T5 with a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine producing 250 horsepower, the T6 with a supercharged and turbocharged version delivering 316 horsepower, and the Recharge plug-in hybrid with a combined 455 horsepower. All models featured all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Recharge model provided an electric range of up to 58 kilometres and impressive fuel efficiency. The XC90's driving experience was characterized by minimal body roll and smooth power delivery, thanks to the electric motor's early torque. The SUV handled like a smaller vehicle, offering a fun and spirited drive.

Form and function
2021 Toyota RAV4
8/10
2022 Volvo XC90
8/10

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 offered a tall, upright roof providing ample headroom and good outward visibility. However, legroom was slightly lacking compared to competitors. The front seats were comfortable, but the rear seats had hard cushions, making long trips less appealing. Cargo space was above average, with 1,059 litres behind the rear seats and 1,977 litres with them folded. The interior featured oversized knobs and easy-to-use controls, but storage space was somewhat limited.

The 2022 Volvo XC90 was available in six- or seven-passenger configurations, with easy access to the third row. While the third row was suitable for children, adults might find it cramped. The XC90 offered 357 litres of luggage space behind the third row, expanding to 1,855 litres with all seats folded. It could tow up to 2,250 kilograms, making it versatile for various needs. The interior was spacious and comfortable, with ample storage options and a panoramic moonroof enhancing the airy feel. The climate control system performed well even in extreme conditions, ensuring comfort year-round.

Technology

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 featured standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with most trims offering a 7-inch touchscreen, while higher trims had an 8-inch screen. The infotainment system was user-friendly but lacked standout features. A JBL premium audio system and SiriusXM were available, but the gasoline RAV4 did not offer a head-up display.

The 2022 Volvo XC90's Sensus infotainment system provided tablet-like functionality with a 9-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen. While intuitive, it was occasionally slow to respond. The system worked better with Apple CarPlay, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel offered customization options. The Advanced package included a head-up display and a 360-degree camera system. The XC90 featured multiple USB ports for convenience and a Harman-Kardon audio system on higher trims.

Safety

2022 Volvo XC90
9/10

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 received a "Top Safety Pick" rating from the IIHS, with top scores in crash tests and front-crash prevention. However, it missed the "Top Safety Pick+" due to mixed headlight scores. The NHTSA awarded it a five-star overall rating. Standard safety features included Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, with adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and more.

The 2022 Volvo XC90 continued Volvo's legacy of safety, with features like blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and Pilot Assist for assisted driving. It received the IIHS "Top Safety Pick+" designation and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA. The XC90's comprehensive safety suite made it a top choice for safety-conscious buyers.
