2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

The “S” in the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS name is meant to connect the SUV to the S-Class flagship sedan. In this sense, the GLS is the S-Class of SUVs, and it delivers on that positioning. The 2021 GLS-Class has three rows of spacious seating, and puts comfort above all else. The GLS can hold groceries, weekend bags, antique desks purchased from a roadside consignment shop—all things that would require a lot of negotiating in the S-Class sedan.

The GLS is one member of a growing fraternity of full-size, three-row, luxury SUVs. Their ranks include the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, Infiniti QX80, and the more recent BMW X7. The GLS sets itself apart with a higher standard of luxury, and impressive performance… if you’re willing to shell out the cash.

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Reviews Summary

The summer of 2022 has been a doozy. Gas prices went sky high and heat waves rolled across the country. If you’re rethinking the purchase of a three-row SUV and trying to find a fuel-efficient solution that emits greenhouse gas emissions only part of the time, the seven-passenger Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid might be a good solution. It doesn’t offer all-wheel drive (AWD) as other Pacificas do, but it has a plug-in hybrid powertrain supplying a Natural Resources Canada-rated 51 kilometres of electric range before the gasoline V6 engine fires up to deliver 8.0 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving.

Look and feel
2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid
5/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS, a continuation of the third generation introduced in 2020, was a luxurious SUV that evolved from the GL-Class, originally intended to replace the G-Class. However, the G-Class's enduring popularity led the GLS to cater to affluent families seeking a more practical yet opulent vehicle. The GLS featured a sleek design with softened angles, making it appear less bulky than its predecessors. Inside, it boasted a futuristic cabin dominated by a massive digital screen, emphasizing its tech-centric nature. Available in three trims—GLS 450, GLS 580, and the high-performance AMG GLS 63—the GLS offered a range of standard features, including remote keyless entry, nine USB ports, and a 13-speaker Burmester sound system. Various option packages allowed for further customization, enhancing comfort and style.

In contrast, the 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid was a unique offering in the minivan segment, combining practicality with plug-in hybrid efficiency. Despite its minivan image, the Pacifica Hybrid provided a compelling alternative to three-row SUVs, thanks to its sliding side doors and spacious interior. The Pacifica Hybrid was not a standout in terms of aesthetics, even with the S Appearance Package, but it excelled in functionality. The base model started at $55,995, with the Limited trim priced at $58,995 and the Pinnacle model at $60,995. Our test vehicle, a Pacifica Hybrid Limited, featured additional options, bringing the total cost to $64,960. While the interior was comfortable, with quality leather and ample storage, the Pacifica's design felt somewhat dated compared to more modern competitors. Nevertheless, its electric-only driving range and practicality made it an attractive choice for families prioritizing efficiency.

Performance

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered a range of powerful engines, starting with the GLS 450's twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six, producing 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The GLS 580 4MATIC featured a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, delivering 483 hp and 516 lb-ft. The AMG GLS 63, our test model, boasted a hand-crafted 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, generating an impressive 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. All engines were paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and Mercedes' 4MATIC AWD system. The EQ Boost 48-volt mild-hybrid system added an extra 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque when needed. The AMG GLS 63 accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds, with a top speed of 280 km/h. Its adaptive air suspension and multiple drive modes ensured a smooth and agile driving experience, defying its size and weight.

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid featured a plug-in hybrid drivetrain based on a 3.6-litre V6 engine paired with a dual-motor electric drive system. This setup provided a total system output of 260 horsepower, with immediate torque from the electric drive system. The Pacifica Hybrid could travel up to 51 kilometres on electric power alone, making it ideal for short commutes and errands. Recharging was simple, requiring only a standard household outlet. The regenerative braking system helped extend the electric range, and the transition between electric and gasoline power was seamless. While the Pacifica Hybrid's driving dynamics were unremarkable, its powertrain impressed with its efficiency. The van achieved an average fuel economy of 6.3 litres per 100 kilometres, outperforming its main rival, the Toyota Sienna, in terms of efficiency. However, the Pacifica Hybrid's driving experience was less engaging, with light steering and a somewhat unnatural ride quality.

Form and function

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered three rows of spacious seating, with ample headroom and legroom for first- and second-row occupants. Standard seven-passenger seating could be reduced to six with optional second-row captain's chairs. The third row, while less spacious, accommodated full-size adults comfortably. The GLS provided 355 litres of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 1,209 litres with the third row folded and 2,400 litres with both the second and third rows down. The driver and front passenger enjoyed numerous storage compartments, though the centre console was somewhat limited in size.

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid excelled in comfort and utility, offering three comfortable rows of seats and substantial cargo space. The interior featured triple-zone automatic climate control, quality leather upholstery, and heated and ventilated front seats. Storage options were abundant, with extra shelves, a large floor tray, and a long storage bin accessible from the second row. The second-row seats were more comfortable than the standard Pacifica's Stow n' Go chairs, though they required removal to maximize cargo space. The third-row seat provided reasonable comfort, with cupholders, USB ports, and window shades. The Pacifica Hybrid offered 914 litres of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 2,477 litres with the third row folded and 3,978 litres with the second-row seats removed.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS featured the MBUX infotainment system, with a massive touch screen and a trackpad for navigation. It included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, though a USB-C cable was required. The MBUX system's voice-control feature allowed for complex commands, while the digital dash extended to the instrument panel, controlled by touch-sensitive pads on the steering wheel. The system required a learning curve but offered a comprehensive and customizable experience.

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid came equipped with the Uconnect 5 infotainment system, featuring a 10.1-inch touchscreen display with appealing graphics and a user-friendly interface. It supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as SiriusXM satellite radio. The FamCam overhead camera system allowed parents to monitor rear-seat passengers. While the voice recognition technology was inconsistent, the system's overall operation was satisfactory. The Pacifica Hybrid also offered a 20-speaker Harman Kardon sound system and an optional rear-seat entertainment system with Amazon Fire TV. A surround-view camera system and parking assist were available, though the latter was less effective than manual parking skills.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS came standard with a range of driver-assistance features, including Active Brake Assist, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high beams. Additional safety tech included lane-change assist, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot monitoring. The GLS was equipped with a full array of airbags, traction control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system.

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid boasted an extensive list of standard safety features, including a rear-seat reminder system. While adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-keeping assist were standard on the Pinnacle trim, the system required refinement. The Pacifica earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, though its frontal-impact protection received four stars.
