2022 Ford Maverick Reviews Summary

Ford pickup trucks are Canada’s best-sellers, but that doesn’t mean the Blue Oval is satisfied. The 2022 Ford Maverick aims to further expand the market by offering a more approachable version of the pickup. The Maverick is the smallest Ford truck in over a decade, uses car-like unibody construction for greater refinement, and emphasizes fuel efficiency with a standard hybrid powertrain.

The all-new Maverick’s closest rivals are the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz and the Honda Ridgeline, other unibody pickups of similar size. But while the new Santa Cruz was conceived more as an SUV with a bed, the Maverick is more like a conventional pickup, just smaller than Ford’s other offerings.

The Maverick slots just below the Ford Ranger in size, although it’s still a bit larger than the compact pickups of old. With the demise of the EcoSport crossover, the Maverick is also now Ford’s de facto entry-level vehicle, which seems fitting for a company whose bestselling product is the F-150. Ford isn’t really a car company; it’s a truck company.

While the Ford F-150 is available in a dizzying array of configurations, the automaker kept things simple with the 2022 Maverick. The new Ford pickup is available in just three trim levels—XL, XLT, and Lariat—with a single bed length and cab configuration. At Ford’s invitation, we sampled the full lineup over two days.

2023 GMC Canyon Reviews Summary

2023 marks the third generation of GMC's midsize pickup truck. The first-generation Canyon arrived for the 2004 model year as a replacement for the compact GMC Sonoma, and after a short hiatus a second-generation Canyon was introduced as a 2015 model. Throughout, the Canyon has been a twin of the Chevrolet Colorado, with only a few differences to distinguish the ostensibly upscale GMC from its working-class sibling. That changes for 2023.

The new Canyon is once again based on the Colorado, sharing the Chevy's body-on-frame platform, powertrain, and tech features. This time around, though, the Canyon is further distinguished from the Colorado by skipping some of the Chevy's entry-level features. That will raise the out-the-door price of a 2023 Canyon, but it's in keeping with the truck's positioning above the Colorado.

The Canyon is once again available in the base Elevation, luxury Denali, and off-road-oriented AT4 grades familiar to owners of the outgoing model. For 2023, GMC also adds a Canyon AT4X model that dials up the off-road capability. We drove it, as well as the Elevation and AT4 models, to see if this redesign is really an improvement.

However, its front end diverged from this pattern, featuring large headlights and a grille crossbar that didn't make a particularly strong styling statement. Despite being smaller than the Ford Ranger, the Maverick maintained a substantial presence, measuring 5,073 millimetres in length and 1,879 millimetres in height. It utilized a unibody platform shared with the Ford Escape and Bronco Sport, distinguishing it from Ford's larger body-on-frame trucks. The Maverick's interior was a standout feature, with a design that made economical use of materials while maintaining a stylish and unique character. The use of multicoloured plastic and exposed fasteners added to its charm, and even the base model offered seats with an attractive weave pattern.

In contrast, the 2023 GMC Canyon exuded a more aggressive and muscular look, with its headlights and daytime running lights positioned alongside a broad grille and a pronounced front bumper. The body sides featured bulges and creases, enhancing its tough appearance. Sharing dimensions with the Chevy Colorado, the Canyon boasted a longer wheelbase and an "Ultra Wide Track" stance, providing a commanding presence. The Canyon's interior, particularly in the Denali trim, offered a touch of luxury with laser-etched open-pore wood trim and leather upholstery. The AT4X model added a splash of drama with its red-and-white upholstery and red dashboard trim. Overall, the Canyon's design aimed to combine ruggedness with a touch of sophistication, appealing to those seeking a bold and distinctive midsize truck.

The 2022 Ford Maverick offered a standard hybrid powertrain featuring a 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and a continuously variable transmission (CVT), delivering a total system output of 191 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque. An optional 2.0-litre EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder engine provided 250 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid variant was available only with front-wheel drive, while the EcoBoost version offered all-wheel drive. The Maverick's FX4 off-road package added features like different suspension tuning, underbody protection, and specialized drive modes, enhancing its off-road capabilities. On-road, the Maverick's unibody platform contributed to a car-like driving experience, with smooth ride quality and improved maneuverability compared to larger pickups.
